IO's production of 007 First Light isn't merely a Hitman rebrand as James Bond; fears of subpar delivery from IO are now alleviated.

In the latest instalment of the James Bond series, 007: First Light, players find themselves joining the young secret agent on his first mission. Developed by IO Interactive, this origin story offers a unique take on the Bond universe, distinct from other games, books, and films.

The game begins in an unconventional manner, with Bond acting as a chauffeur, driving up to a hotel in the Slovakian mountains. As the story unfolds, Bond must employ stealth and cunning to bypass guards and gain access to the hotel. This tone is unapologetically Bond, with stunts that are believable for Daniel Craig's portrayal of the iconic spy.

The gameplay is a mix of the familiar and the innovative. The gunplay, while slightly less refined than the driving, requires a keen eye and quick reflexes. However, the driving sequences are a new venture for IO Interactive, featuring high-speed car chases and large-scale open areas.

One of the standout features of 007: First Light is the incorporation of stealth elements, reminiscent of IO Interactive's history with the Hitman series. Bond's Q watch is a crucial tool, allowing him to assess the environment and gather information.

The game does not shy away from the arcade-y territory, with some sequences reminiscent of Uncharted's biggest set pieces. However, it also maintains a balance between self-assuredness and junior agent inexperience, creating a confident interpretation of Bond.

In one thrilling sequence, Bond jumps behind the wheel of some mobile stairs to climb aboard a rapidly accelerating cargo plane. In another, he utilizes an empty rifle as a makeshift weapon, causing enemies to stagger, providing a brief respite for close combat. Bond even demonstrates a practiced flick to kick a fresh gun up to his hands, continuing his rampage without missing a beat.

The game also features an enormous shootout at an airfield, which is more reminiscent of Just Cause or The Expendables than the tighter scenes of modern action movies. The developers chose this approach to make the game more relatable to a younger audience.

007: First Light serves as an origin story for the young secret agent's first mission, offering a fresh take on the iconic James Bond franchise. With its mix of stealth, action, and high-speed car chases, it's a game that is sure to appeal to both long-time Bond fans and newcomers alike.
